Kausambi

Excavations at Kausambi 1949-50

It was established in the late Vedic period, by the rulers of Kuruvamsa Kingdom ( as their new capital. The  Kuru capital Hastinapur was destroyed by floods, and the Kuru King transferred his entire capital with the subjects to a new capital that he built near the Ganga-Jamuma confluence, which was 56 km away from the southernmost part of the Kuru Kingdom now known  as Prayagraj previously called Allahabad.

Senior archaeologists at the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) claimed on Friday that the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata could date back to 1500-2000 BCE, instead of 900-1000 BCE as commonly believed on the basis of the findings of renowned archaeologist BB Lal.

The claim follows the findings at the excavation site of Sanauli, 68 km away from Delhi and  the discovery of a “war chariot” allegedly driven by a horse, a rusted bow and arrow, a burial site and ochre.

What is Mahabharata? What is the time of Mahabharata?

Mahabharata is also an itihasa of India.

It describes the childhood and growth of Kauravas and Pandavas, children of Kings of Hastinapur and their war for Kingdom. Pandavas won the war. Lord Krishna, the incarnation of God Vishnu was with Pandavas.

Hastinapur of Mahabharat is now near  a city (Meerut) in the Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.  Hastinapur is located on the right bank of the Ganges river.

Pandava Vamsam after Abhimanyu

Arjuna → Srutakriti + Abhimanyu (from Subhadra of Dwaravati)

Abhimanyu (w:Uttara d/o Virata) → Parikshit (Madravati → Janamejaya (w:Vapushtama) → Satanika (w. Videha) → Aswamedhadatta (अश्वमेध दत्त) (I.90.95)).
Further in the lineage, are mentioned, Adhisima-krishna and Nichakshu.

According to the Chhandogya Upanishad the whole of the northern doab, including the area covered by the South Panchala suffered from natural calamities such as floods, locusts and hailstorms. The capital of the Kurus, Hastinapura, being washed away, Nichakshu, fourth in line from Janamejaya, shifted his capital from Hastinapur to Kausambi. Their migration across the South Panchala and passage through that region brought about a fusion of the Kurus and the Panchalas.
