1941 - Julie Christie, actress Dr. Zhivago, born in Assam, India


Christie was born on 14 April 1940 at Singlijan Tea Estate, Chabua, Assam, British India, the elder child of Rosemary (1912–1982), a Welsh painter, and Francis "Frank" St. John Christie (1904–1963). Her father ran the tea plantation where she was raised. Frank and Rosemary Christie separated when Julie was a child. They went back to England and  she lived with a foster mother from the age of six.

Christie made her professional stage debut in 1957, and her first screen roles were on British television. Her big break came in the 1961 BBC serial A for Andromeda.

In 1962, Christie appeared in feature films with co-starring roles in a pair of comedies for Independent Artists: Crooks Anonymous and The Fast Lady. Her breakthrough role,  was as Liz, the friend and would-be lover of the eponymous character played by Tom Courtenay in Billy Liar (1963), which earned her a BAFTA Award nomination.

Life magazine hailed 1965 as "The Year of Julie Christie" when the young actress became known internationally for her role  in Darling, directed by Schlesinger and co-starring Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey. She won numerous accolades for her performance, including the Academy Award for Best Actress.

1563 - Guru Arjan Dev



Guru Arjan (15 April 1563 – 30 May 1606) was the fifth Sikh Guru. He compiled writings of earlier Gurus to create the Guru Granth Sahib. He was born in Goindval, Punjab the youngest son of Guru Ram Das and Mata Bhani, the daughter of Guru Amar Das.

Guru Arjan led Sikhism for a quarter of a century. He completed the construction of Harimandir Sahib at Amritsar, after the fourth Sikh Guru founded the town and built a pool. He installed Adi Granth, the first edition of the Sikh scripture, in the Harimandir Sahib.[4]

Guru Arjan  suggested that the Sikhs donate, if possible, one tenth of their income, goods or service to the Sikh organization (dasvand).  The dasvand financed the building of gurdwaras and langars.

Guru Arjan was arrested under the orders of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir and asked to convert to Islam. He refused, was tortured and executed in 1606 CE. Shaheedi Divas of Guru Arjan is organized every year on 16 June, according to the Nanakshahi calendar released by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in 2003.

Raja Balwant Singh - Benares

Jayachandra, a Gahadavala Rajput, ruled the kingdom of Kashi. He had opposed the combined forces of Muizzuddin and Qutbuddin at Chandwar on the Yamuna in the district of Etawah. He could not stop the muslim attack.  Qutbuddin advanced up to Benares and plundered the city. He destroyed many temples and erected mosques on their foundations. The country was placed under Malik Husamuddin Ughulbak, to whom the local rajas and nobles, professed their allegiance.

Since this conquest, the kingdom of Benares had remained a part of the Turko-Afghan Empire, save the short period of the Sharqis of Jaunpore (1399-1479). Babar brought Benares within the Mughal sphere of influence. Akbar reconquered the territory and  and included the district of Benares within the vice royalty of Allahabad suba. It remained with Allahabad up to the reign of Aurangzeb who transferred it to the suba of Awadh.

Benares was considered very important in the Mughal period. Some of the princes of royal blood resided there as governors. Dara Shukoh, the eldest and the most favourite son of Shahjehan, lived
here for several years.

Rustam Ali Khan entrusted a Bhumihar Brahmin, called Mansa Ram, with the responsibility of
collecting revenue from these sarkars. As a mark of appreciation for Mansa Ram’s efficient performance as a revenue collector, Rustam Ali Khan solicited Emperor Muhammad Shah through
Murtaza Khan to confer upon him the title of Raja Bahadur. Mansa Ram prayed that his son is grated the honour. So, his eldest son, Balwant Singh, got the title. Thus Balwant  Singh became the Zamindar of  Jaunpore, Benares and Mirzapore on June 9, 1738.

The treaty of Allahabad was finally signed on the 16th August, 1765. The English restored to Shuja-ud-daula all his dominions with the exception of Chunar (which was retained by the English)
and the districts of Kora and Allahabad (which were given to Emperor Shah Alam II). Also, Benares was freed from the Nawab and came under the protection of East India Company.

1783 - Tipu Sultan drove British out of Bednoor.

1965 - Fighting erupted between Indian and Pakistani troops in Rann of Kutch.

Fighting breaks out in the Rann of Kutch between Indian and Pakistani troops. Pakistan attacked Indian borders, Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet, this was manned by the State Armed Police Batallions. In Kutch launched its 8th Infantry Division supported by two regiments of M47/48 Pattons.

This was followed by further activity on 5 August 1965. Between 26,000 and 33,000 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control dressed as Kashmiri locals headed for various areas within Kashmir.

1984 - Captain Banihal Singh of Indian army crossed Banihal Pass with a hand glider and  created a world record.

He  scored 5 centuries and 6 fifties during the course of his Test career. As a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Mankad twice took 8-wickets in an innings. He tok 162 wickets.

Kasturba Gandhi (1869-1944)

Kasturbai was born in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. Her father was a well-to-do businessman.

Her public life began after she joined her husband, Mohandas Gandhi in South Africa in 1897. From 1904-14, she was the heart and soul of the 'Phoenix Settlement' and from Kasturbai she became Kasturba-mother to the inmates, a role she continued at Kochnab, Sabarmati, and Sevagram Ashrams in India.

On 22 February 1944 on Mahashivratri Day she breathed her last on the lap of her beloved husband.
