Maharana Pratap - Biography

Birthday - 9 May 1540

Maharana Pratap (May 9, 1540 – January 19, 1597) was a Hindu Rajput ruler of Mewar, a region in north-western India in the present day state of Rajasthan. He belonged to the Sisodiya sect of Rajputs

Rana Pratap is considered to exemplify the qualities like bravery and chivalry to which Rajputs aspire, in  his opposition to the Mughal emperor Akbar. The struggle between Rajputs led by Rana Pratap , and the Mughal Empire under Akbar, has often been characterised as a struggle between Hindus and the invading Muslims, much on the same lines as the struggles of Guru Gobind Singh,  Chhatrapati Shivaji and Chhatrasal Bundela.

Rana Pratap was defeated in Battle of Haldighati but he escaped into the hills and successfully recovered his territories except Chittorgarh and ruled them till his death without accepting the authority of Akbar.

Pingali Venkayya - Freedom Fighter - Designer of Indian Flag

Indian Flag flying high on Independence Day
2013 PM's address on Independence Day

Date of Birth 2 August 1876

Pingali Venkaiah was born at Bhatlapenumarru, Krishna district, near  Machilipatnam of Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to a Telugu Brahmin family. After finishing his primary education at Challapalli and school at the Hindu High School, Masulipatnam(now, Machilipatnam), he went to Colombo to complete his Senior Cambridge.

At the age of 19, he served in the British Indian army during the Anglo-Boer wars in South Africa. It was there he came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi and was influenced by his ideology.

Subsequently, he worked as a railway guard at Bangalore and Madras and subsequently joined the government service as the plague officer at Bellary before moving to Lahore, where he enrolled in the Anglo-Vedic college to study Urdu and Japanese.

During his five years stay in the north, he became active in politics. Pingali met many revolutionaries and helped plan to overthrow colonial rule. The 1906 Congress session with Dadabhai Naoroji allowed Pingali to emerge as an activist and a force behind the decision-making committee. Here he met the famous philanthropist, the Raja of Munagala, and from 1906–11, he spent his time in Munagala researching agriculture and crops. For his pioneering study on Cambodian cotton, he came to be called Patti Venkayya. Even the British were impressed by his contributions to agriculture and conferred on him honorary membership of the Royal Agricultural Society of Britain.

He also learned Geology and became  an authority on diamond mining, leading to his popular nickname of "Diamond Venkayya" also.

He returned to his roots at Masulipatnam and focused on developing the National School (at Masulipatnam), where he taught basic military training, horse riding, history and knowledge of agriculture, soil, crops and agriculture's relation to nature. In 1914, he turned his agricultural land into an estate and named it Swetchapuram.

During the National conference of the Indian National Congress at Kakinada, Venkayya suggested that India should have a national flag. Gandhi liked this proposal. He suggested that Venkayya came up with a design. During the National conference at Vijayawada, Venkayya proposed a flag with an Ashoka Chakra at the middle. Gandhi liked the result, and the design was later adopted as the National Flag of India.  The flags antecedents can be traced back to the Vande Mataram movement. Pingali's flag was made of red and green, representing the country's two major communities. The Indian flag was not officially accepted by the All India Congress Committee. However, Gandhi's approval made it popular and it was hoisted at all Congress sessions. Hansraj of Jallandar suggested the representation of the charkha, symbolising progress and the common man. Gandhi insisted on a white strip to represent India's remaining minority communities. A consensus was not reached until 1931. The colour choices produced controversy as communal tension broke over its interpretation. The final resolution passed when the AICC met at Karachi in 1931. The flag was interpreted as saffron for courage, white for truth and peace, and green for faith and prosperity. The dharma chakhra which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath at the capital of Emperor Ashoka was adopted in place of spindle and string as the emblem on the national flag.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan proposed that saffron denote renunciation or disinterestedness of political leaders towards material gains in life, that white depict enlightenment, lighting the path of truth to guide our conduct and that green symbolise our relation to the soil, to the plant life here on which all other life depends. The Ashoka wheel in the centre of the white strip represented the law of dharma.

Speaking philosophically, he remarked that the national flag ought to control the principles of all those who worked under it. The wheel denoted motion and India should no more resist change as there was death produced only stagnation.

Pingali Venkayya died on 4 July 1963 in Vijayawada.

Government of Andhra Pradesh recommened Bharat Ratna to him in 2012

Nanasahib Peshwa - 1857 India Freedom War Leader

Birth 19 May 1824

In 1827 he was adopted by Peshwa.

He was denied the pension given to his father as he was an adopted son. He took active part in the 1857 war against British.

On 6 June 1857, at the time of the rebellion by forces of the East India Company at Cawnpore, Nanasahib and his forces entered the British magazine situated in the northern part of the town. The soldiers of the 53rd Native Infantry, who were guarding the magazine, thought that Sahib had come to guard the magazine on behalf of the Company. However, once he entered the magazine, Nana Sahib announced that he was a participant in the rebellion against the Company. After taking possession of the Company treasury, Sahib advanced up the Grand Trunk Road stating that he wanted to restore the Maratha confederacy under the Peshwa tradition, and decided to capture Cawnpore. On his way, Sahib met the rebel Company soldiers at Kalyanpur. Sahib wanted them to join his forces and they agreed.

On 6 June, his forces (including the rebel soldiers) attacked the Company soldiers gathered at an entrenchment at 10:30 am The Company forces  managed to defend themselves as the attacking forces were reluctant to enter the entrenchment. The Indian forces laid the siege and waited. The Company forces  held out in their makeshift fort for three weeks with little water and food supplies, and lost many lives due to sunstroke and lack of water.

As the news of advances over the capture of  British garrison spread, several more rebel sepoys joined Peshwa's forces. By 10 June, he was believed to be leading around twelve thousand to fifteen thousand Indian soldiers.During the first week of the siege, the Nana Sahib's forces encircled the attachment, created loopholes and established firing positions from the surrounding buildings. The defending Captain John Moore retaliated and launched night-time sorties. The Nana Sahib withdrew his headquarters to Savada House (or Savada Kothi), which was situated around two miles away.

The sniper fire and the bombardment continued until 23 June 1857, the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Plassey. The Battle of Plassey, which took place on 23 June 1757, was one of the pivotal battles leading to the expansion of the East India Company rule in India.  This prompted the rebel soldiers under Nana Sahib to launch a major attack on the entrenchment on 23 June 1857. However, they were unable to gain an entry into the entrenchment by the end of the day.

The entrenchment had been steadily losing its soldiers and civilians to successive bombardments, sniper fire, and assaults from the attackers. It was also suffering from disease and low supplies of food, water and medicine. The Nana Sahib and his advisers came up with a plan to end the deadlock. On 24 June, he sent a female European prisoner, Rose Greenway, to the entrenchment to convey their message. In return for a surrender, he promised the safe passage of the Europeans to the Satichaura Ghat, a dock on the Ganges from which they could depart for Allahabad. Next day, on 25 June, Nana Sahib sent a second note, signed by himself, through another female prisoner, Mrs. Jacobi.  Finally, the company force decided to surrender, in return for a safe passage to Allahabad. After a day of preparation and burying their dead, the Europeans decided to leave for Allahabad on the morning of 27 June 1857. But when, the forces had started in their boats, there were gun shots and confusion and the soldiers were killed by many rebels who assembled on the banks of Ganga.

The East India Company sent forces to recapture Cawnpore and they reached Cawnpore on 16 July 1857. General Havelock was the commander of the forces and he was informed that Sahib had taken up a position at the Ahirwa village. His forces launched an attack on Sahib's forces, and emerged victorious. Sahib then blew up the Cawnpore magazine, abandoned the place, and retreated to Bithoor. On 19 July, General Havelock attacked Bithoor, but Nana Sahib had already left it and his palace at Bithoor was occupied without resistance. The British troops seized guns, elephants and camels, and set fire to Sahib's palace.

Thus, he disappeared at the of the war. His whereabouts are still under investigation and debate.

Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Mookerjee was born on July 6, 1901 in Calcutta.. His father was Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, a well
respected advocate in Bengal, who became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta,

Mookerjee  graduated in English securing first position in first class in 1921 and also did MA in 1923
and BL in 1924. He became a fellow of the Senate in 1923. He left for England in 1926 to study in Lincoln’s
Inn and became a barrister in 1927. At the age of 32, he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Calcutta (1934), and held the office till 1938.

Political career

He was elected as member of the Legislative Council of Bengal, as a Indian National Congress
candidate representing Calcutta University but resigned next year when Congress decided to boycott
the legislature. Subsequently, he contested the election as an independent candidate and got
elected. He was the Finance minister of Bengal Province during 1941-42.

He emerged as a spokesman for Nationalism and shortly joined Hindu Mahasabha and in 1944, he
became the President. Mookerjee was not anti-Muslim, but a Hindu political leader who felt the need to
counteract the communalist and separatist Muslim League of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who were
demanding either exaggerated Muslim rights or a Muslim state of Pakistan.

Mookerjee adopted causes to unite Hindu voices, and protect Hindus against what he believed to
be the communal propaganda and the divisive agenda of the Muslim League. To Mookerjee, the Muslims
were a minority and thus could not in any reasonable system be given a status superior to the majority
Hindu masses. Mookerjee and his future followers would always cite inherent Hindu practices of
tolerance and communal respect as the reason for a healthy, prosperous and safe Muslim population in the
country in the first place.

He wanted the Hindu Mahasabha not to be restricted to Hindus alone or work as apolitical
body for the service of masses.

Post-Independence

He was inducted into the  Interim Central Government as a Minister for Industry and Supply.
But on issue of the 1949 Delhi Pact with Pakistani Prime Minister Liaqat Ali Khan, Mookerjee
resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950. Mookerjee was firmly against Nehru’s invitation to the
Pakistani PM, and their joint pact to establish minority commissions and guarantee minority rights in both
countries. He wanted to hold Pakistan directly responsible for the terrible influx of millions of Hindu
refugees from East Pakistan, who had left the state fearing religious suppression and violence aided by
the state.

Mookerjee considered Nehru’s actions as appeasement, and was hailed as a hero by the people of West Bengal.

With support from Guruji, Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar, Sarsanghachalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh, Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (IndianPeople’s Union) on October 21, 1951
at Delhi and became its first President.

The party criticized favoritism to India’s Muslims by the Nehru administration.  The BJS also favored a uniform civil code for both Hindus and Muslims, want to ban cow slaughter and end the special
status of Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir. The BJS founded the Hindutva agenda which became the
wider political expression of India’s nationalism. In the 1952 general elections to the Parliament of India,
Mookerjee and the BJS won 3 seats. Mookerjee went to visit Kashmir in 1953, and went on
hunger strike to protest the law prohibiting Indian citizens from settling in a state in their own country and the need to carry ID cards, and was arrested on 11th May while crossing border. Although the ID card rule was
revoked owing to his efforts, he died as detenu on June 23, 1953 under mysterious circumstances.
His death in custody raised wide suspicion across the country and demands for independent enquiry,
including earnest requests from his mother, Jogmaya Devi to the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal
Nehru. Unfortunately no enquiry commission was set up and his death remains a mystery.
